QNX and neueHCT have won a programme with a major German carmaker to supply an intelligent driving camera system for a global passenger vehicle platform launching in China. The rollout will also extend to Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea.

Production is due to start in 2027, with volumes projected to reach several million units within the first three years.

The programme centres on neueHCT's HCT Luna smart camera system, which runs on QNX software and uses Horizon Robotics' Journey 6B automotive computing platform. The product is intended for passenger vehicles sold in China and selected international markets.

The award marks the first large global programme for the HCT Luna system using QNX software. It also expands the product from individual vehicle applications to broader deployment across multiple platforms and models.

neueHCT is a joint venture between Horizon Robotics and AUMOVIO. The company focuses on advanced driver assistance and intelligent driving systems for carmakers.

The camera system is designed to bring active safety features and a front-view smart camera to mass-production vehicles as standard equipment. Supported functions include Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning and Traffic Light Recognition.

It also supports driving scenarios such as vehicle cut-ins, sharp bends, construction zones and vehicle centring where lane markings are limited or unavailable.

Safety software

At the software level, the system is built on QNX OS for Safety 8.0. QNX said the software delivers deterministic performance, fault isolation and real-time responsiveness, and is certified to ISO 26262 ASIL D and assessed to ISO/SAE 21434 for automotive cybersecurity.

The underlying architecture is designed to be adapted across different vehicle platforms, which could help carmakers shorten development and launch cycles while maintaining consistent functions across models, regions and road conditions.

The programme is also notable for its geographic reach. Although the vehicle platform will launch in China, the initial scope includes several Asia-Pacific markets, giving the system an early international footprint beyond a single domestic market.

Simon Zhang, Chief Operating Officer of neueHCT, said the award showed the company had met the standards expected by global original equipment manufacturers.

"Securing this win demonstrates that neueHCT's solution has met the technical standards required by global OEMs," said Simon Zhang, Chief Operating Officer of neueHCT. "By combining our scalable intelligent driving architecture with Horizon Robotics' Journey 6B platform and QNX OS for Safety 8.0, we are providing automakers with a high-quality solution that meets market access requirements and user needs across diverse overseas markets and regions."

QNX is the automotive software business within BlackBerry. According to the company, its software is already used by a wide range of carmakers and suppliers, including BMW, Bosch, Continental, Geely, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo.

The latest award gives QNX another production programme in advanced driver assistance, an area where software suppliers are seeking long-term roles as vehicles become more dependent on centralised computing and safety-certified operating systems.

John Wall, President of QNX, linked the programme to carmakers' efforts to use the same systems across larger and more complex model ranges.

"Automakers need intelligent driving solutions that can deliver safety, predictable performance and flexibility across increasingly complex vehicle programs," said John Wall, President of QNX. "This program demonstrates the role QNX OS for Safety 8.0 can play in helping scale advanced driver assistance capabilities across platforms, models and markets. We are proud to provide the trusted, real-time software foundation for this important milestone and look forward to helping advance its rollout around the world."
